Organisation and Forces

This section documents the organisation of the Royal Navy and the Forces which it has available.  It should be noted that the 1998 Strategic Defence Review removed many assets from the direct operational control of CINCFLEET at Northwood and re-assigned them to other multi-service Headquarters and Organisations.  For example:

  • 3 Commando Brigade now forms part of the "Joint Rapid Reaction Force", alongside Army units.

  • The old Commando Helicopter Force of 847NAS (Gazelle & Lynx) and 845, 846 and 848NAS (Sea King HC.4) now form part of the "Joint Helicopter Command", alongside Army and RAF units.

  • The RN's Sea Harrier squadron's (800NAS, 801NAS and 899NAS) became part of "Joint Force Harrier", alongside RAF units in RAF Strike Command. These squadrons will have all have all been disbanded by 2006 as part of defence cuts announced in April 2002, although 800 and 801NAS may reform as Harrier GR.9 squadrons.
